The 12th day

What is so special about the 12th day? Well, I'm not sure about others but in my family custom (I'm a cantonese & husband is a hakka), the 12th day in confinement has the following significance:

1. I can wash my hair on this day, and thereafter I can wash hair every 3-4 days. (hooray!)
2. Relatives & friends will come to visit me & baby on this day.
3. I'll serve pig trotter in vinegar & chicken in yellow wine to the guests & my family.

I very much look forward to this day, as I can wash my hair finally & get freshen up. Most importantly, I get to eat my favourite pig trotter in vinegar (without worrying about the weight I'm gonna put on, hahaha)........yummy!!! My aunt, who was my confinement nanny last time, will be cooking the pig trotter & I myself will cook the chicken in yellow wine.

I'll post pictures & share the recipes with all in my other blog afterwards.

I didn't follow the confinement rules. I washed my hair the day I came back from the hospital. I beh tahan smelly & oily hair. The rule of thumb is make sure I'm thoroughly dry before stepping out of the shower stall and blow dry my hair immediately.

Interesting to know such customs :) For me, I washed my hair as soon as I got home from hospital.

Wow! You will be cooking? Look forward to the recipes :)

My fren also did hte same on the 12th day coz the confinement lady told her about it. As for me, never heard of it. Anyway, it's good that you can wash hair... I cannot imagine 12 days w/o washing hair...

Me too part of the gang that washes hair the day I come back from hospital.
Koko Dillon looks really happy to have a playmate. Unfortunately he has to wait little while longer before baby can really play. But looks like they are on their way to being good buddies.

My mom is hakka and my dad is cantonese, so i also heard from my mom about things to do on 12th day like what you say here.
But because i am married to hokkien husband, don't really follow this.
I was just allowed to bath and wash hair from 12th day onwards. But still need to blow dry immediately and need to apply alchohol too.

Maybe it's Hakka thing. I'm Hakka and they have these rules.

Hi K--it sounds like you're doing so nicely!

Wash hair and see family? That's a very good idea (smile).

I wasn't aware of confinement rules, so this has been very interesting to learn.

Thank you for sharing at this time!

Ya. I also follow the rule of washing my hair on the 12th day because my mum insists it. The 2nd time of hair wash was on the 21th day and the 3rd one on full mooon. Must boiled herbal water to bath and must apply alchohol after hair wash.

My relatives also visit after the 12th day. But my mum was not so particular on this, so my freinds can visit me b4 12th day.

Btw, i'm not hakka. I'm teochew.
